It’s really important to know whether or not you are Automatic Writing or Intuitive Writing when it comes to setting up your protective boundaries and being a clear channel for the information.
These two types of writing can be seen a similar, but trust me, as an Intuitive Writer for years, I understand both and I explain the difference in this video (transcript below if you prefer to read it). Neither is the better way, or the only way, just different styles and different ways to manage the energies that come with each writing discipline.
Over the years Iāve created a process for Automatic Writing that I call āIntuitive Automatic Writingā. It has all the amazing benefits of automatic writing but is more intentional.
Itās about:
ā co-creating
ā making sure you are a clear channel and arenāt receiving interference
ā being able to ask questions and get information.
While I love Automatic Writing, it felt aimless to me and I didn’t make time for it once I learned to be an Intuitive Channel.
Once I understood that it can be a tool to communicate with my Higher Self and spirit guides, I then spent almost a decade learning how to make sure it WAS my Higher Self and guides instead of my fears, ego interfering, or cosmic impersonators.
Happy Writing!

If you’ve watched the video and like the idea of Intuitive Writing but don’t know where to begin, I have an intro course called INTUITIVE AUTOMATIC WRITING 101.Ā It’s a great way to explore creating the clear connection you need to bring the Intuitive information through with writing as the tool.
It’s designed to give you the building blocks you need to:
āļømanage your energy
āļø protect your energy while you write
āļøcreate a clear space to access the information clearly so that your ego, limiting beliefs and other people’s fears don’t interrupt your flow. Or worse! Make you second guess everything! (I hate thatš ).
You can find out more about Intuitive Automatic Writing 101 here: Intuitive Automatic Writing 101.

Hi, I’m Nicole Strychaz, from nicolestrychaz.com and I wanted to talk really quickly about the difference between intuitive writing and automatic writing. Actually, I don’t know if it’ll be quickly, but I do want to discuss the difference.
When I was a teenager and I would write, you know, pen in hand to paper, my penmanship would get all over the place. I’d be writing one way and be slanted and then come the other way. And I really felt like I was fighting myself to write. And I used to wonder what the heck is wrong with my penmanship? Why can’t I decide one way to write and just write it? Everyone else had a really distinct way to write. My sister would have her pretty penmanship and it would always look the same every time. And then there was mine. I always thought someone analyzed it would probably look like a serial killer because I heard that you could analyze and you could see like people can’t make up their mind or something when they write. And that’s how mine was. But I didn’t know at the time and much, much later when I was going through an awakening and having a stronger awareness of what was happening, when I wrote, I realized that I was automatic writing.
So automatic writing is this idea that spirit or well Iāll just say spirit can come through you and actually physically write and take your hand. So in my case, I think my penmanship was going all over the place because I didn’t know how to have a connection to one spirit. So I actually think more than one was writing through me. So one was like, hey we’re going to write this way, and the other was like we’re going to write this way and this way. I didn’t have a true one voice with my writing. Automatic writing is that idea that something is coming through and physically helping your hand write.
Well, because I wasn’t comfortable with that once I started understanding about automatic writing, I learned how to set myself up. I learned how to put on my protective boundaries. But I just didn’t feel like that was something I wanted to do. And I have nothing against it. If it’s working for you. But to me, it felt a little like a Ouija board or something where you’re communicating and it’s coming through and telling your hand what to do. And even though I felt really called to write and give information and have writing come through me, I didn’t want something physically taking my hand.
That’s when I discovered intuitive writing. And for me and the reason I want to tell you the difference is because it made me feel a lot more comfortable. So what intuitive writing is, is you yourself so me Nicole in my body, in control of my fingers and keyboards, all those things. But I reach up and I get more information. So I’m connected to, say, my higher self or a collective consciousness. And I hear that information through one of the Clairs. In my case, I’m clear audient. But you could be just know the information and bring it through. Or you could sense it all those different things. But I reach up and then bring the information down. So nothing physically types for me. I just stay clear and can write really clearly, really quickly because that information is intuitively coming to me. So the difference in my mind is automatic writing you kind of clear yourself as a vessel and not something to write through you. And intuitive writing, you still clear yourself, but you connect up and allow that information to come to you and then you bring it through and you either write by hand or on the computer. Artists do this. You could paint the picture that you saw when you brought the information through. I imagine songwriters, singers, all kinds of intuitive ways you can bring it through, but you’re connecting up like a channel, like a tube and you’re pulling the information down and in.
Some people even believe those thoughts are put into collective consciousness. So really, even if you just accept it like, hey, I like that idea, I’ll be the one that brings that through. That’s also intuitive receiving as well. So hopefully that helps. In both cases, I think it’s good to have energetic boundaries and know how to bring the information through. But with automatic writing, if you do it that way, you’ll probably want to look up some posts. There’s ways you can make sure you’re connecting for the highest and greatest good. You want to always know like who is writing through you. If you if you feel that someone’s writing through you and with intuitive writing, you also want the information to be pure. With intuitive writing I think the biggest hang up can be your own ego and your own critical voices that you may have heard in childhood or even from people now that say maybe, who are you to do this or why are you doing that? Or that doesn’t make sense. Those voices can interfere with the intuitive writing, so getting clarity is always helpful. It’s one of the things I teach my clients on how to be a clear channel. So you receive that information and especially if you’re trying to bring through healing messages or things that are helpful for people.
Helpful for people, I can’t say that, you want it to be a pure message. You don’t want your own insecurities or limiting beliefs getting in the way, if you haven’t healed them yet, because then the message can be cloudy. So being a clear channel in either case is really important. But I just was thinking about it lately, I think most people don’t know the difference between being an automatic writer and an intuitive writer, and nothing’s wrong with either. It’s a preference. It’s just my preference happens to be the intuitive writing where I’m mixing my energy with that higher information and bringing it through, acting like a channel vs. stepping aside in my body in any way, shape or form so that it can come through. Not to say that I might not change my mind some day and do something different, but for now that’s what I spent a lot of years devoting my time to is intuitive writing, and I find it exciting and magical and still brings through powerful messages, things that help even me in my life when I have a problem it’ll help me solve the problem. I’ll get information that I may not have had otherwise. Maybe a larger perspective. And that is why for me I love intuitive writing, because I feel that it’s something special and sacred and even moves me forward in my life.
I do think we’re creating some sort of alchemy when we do our intuitive writing that we’re doing more than we think. So that’s been a great asset to my life. But for this video, I just want to bring up the difference between automatic writing and intuitive writing so that if you feel called to be an intuitive writer, you start to head down that path and read posts about that. And if you feel called to do automatic writing, that that’s kind of the direction you head into to get more information about what you’re doing when you do that.
Again, I’m Nicole Strychaz from nicole.strychaz.com. I have posts I’m putting out regularly on my Website so that you can keep up with it. I’m really gearing it toward intuitive writers, things we can do to nourish ourselves, keep our energy up, how to manage the highs and the lows of our energy when we write, because when you do connect intuitively your vibration goes up. And then, of course, what goes up has to come down. So those ways to manage your energy and be more even about it, then going up and then down and crashing. So hopefully I’ll see you on my Website or here on YouTube again. Yeah. So that’s it.

Iāve talked about it before, how we have to choose what we want to do after a certain point. We tend to receive a calling, but that doesnāt mean we are ready for it.
I truly believe most of us HEAL into our calling, rather than STEP into our calling. We need to grow!
Which means at times we can feel very stuck.
As if our current job doesnāt feel right but applying for a new one doesnāt feel right either.
I remember that feeling well. I would look at jobs and just the thought of applying to them made me want to throw up!
I knew I had reached a place where I needed to be doing something high vibe but I didnāt know what it was yet.
So what can you do if you find yourself in this situation?
You can manifest based on how you want to FEEL.
Instead of focusing on manifesting what you want to DO, when you are uncertain of your next steps you try focusing on how you want to feel instead.
Imagine, itās the end of work day, how do you want to feel?
Accomplished?
Happy?
Like your ideas were heard and appreciated?
Maybe you want to feel like you set goals and reached them?
Perhaps you want to feel like you used your creative skills or gifts daily.
What does it really feel like when you finish your work day on a high note?
You can manifest from that place. Try saying, āUniverse, I know Iām on my way to my big picture vision, but in the meantime Iād like to support myself financially with something that feels ____________________.ā
We can be happy and well paid on the way to our dream job. In fact itās easier to manifest from feeling than from thinking (if you ask me).

This idea of manifesting based on how you want to feel sounds easy, but is freaking POWERFUL. Day dream about it! Spend a few minutes a day feeling what it would feel like to be happy in your job, have passive income coming it – FEEL IT!
Then watch how the universe can shift things for you.
If you want to go deeper with this idea of how to manifest your dream job, I offer a digital course on how to Write Your Future. I show you how to clear AND manage your energy so you can manifest with PURE intention to Write Your Future the way YOU want it to be! You can find it here: Write Your Future.
So what is it? How do you want to feel in your current job or your next one? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

I recently had an experience where I had to stop myself from doing āthe right thingā and stand my ground. Well I didnāt HAVE to, but I decided to nonetheless.
It was in Las Vegas in the middle of what can only be described as a “messy vacation.” My youngest got a stomach virus on the way to the hotel. Literally stepping out of the car after a five hour drive and throwing up in the parking lot and asking to lie down on the dirty cement (so gross!!!).
A day later my 11 year old said his stomach hurt out of nowhere and yup, same thing. My husband and I took turns trying to salvage our vacation by hanging out with whichever kid wasnāt sick at the time, but at one point both kids were exhausted and I went looking for food to bring back to the room.
Now if youāve ever stayed in a casino in Vegas, youāll know that itās no easy feat to find something to eat that isnāt a burger or pizza within close range to your room. I think I figured out that it was a mile every time I went looking for something healthy.
Finally, I found a Mexican restaurant in a neighboring hotel and figured a plain cheese quesadilla āto-goā was as good as it was going to get – I was so tired of walking!
The hostess told me to sit at the bar and they would take care of it.
I gratefully sat down and waited for someone to help me. I had been sitting for maybe a minute when a lady came over to me and asked if I was just ordering something to-go and then leaving? I thought it was a weird question at first, but then I realized she wanted my seat. So I said “yes” and asked if she was waiting for my seat. She answered āYesā and walked off, I guess to wait for me to order and stalk my seat from afar.
Eventually someone came to take my order and I asked for a water while I waited (I know water in Vegas instead of a margarita ā but thatās the kind of vacation we were having!).
Now Iāve always loved to people watch so I was enjoying my water and looking around when the lady came back and stood next to me. Where I was sitting there was my seat and one next to me that was open. In my mind, she could take that seat and whoever she was with could stand until my food came. I mean my legs were tired and I did just pay over $30 bucks for two plain quesadillas (plus tip!) and felt I deserved to sit while I waited.
And honestly it had been rough with two sick kids. Because it was a stomach bug the last thing we wanted to do was get back into the car and pretty much the whole trip was non-refundable to boot! So we were both trapped and trying to make the best of it.
The lady came back and stood next to me and I told her, āIām not sure how fast my food will come.ā She looked at me with disdain and said, āOh. Youāre going to sit here and wait for your food?!ā I said, āYes.ā She huffed off angrily to look for another seat (which by the way it looked like there were plenty across the bar).
Now I have to tell you, if youāve been following my blog posts for a while you know that when I write Iām a channel for intuitive information. Which means as long as Iām living my life and meditating, blog posts just show up in my head and I write them. I had a post sitting in my computer ready to publish but I ran out of time before this trip. And as so often happens, this post was meant for me as much as it was meant for you.
It was about how when we are empaths, it is hard for us to feel we deserve things. A part of me wanted to say, āOh there are two of them and they want to sit and have a drink and Iām only getting take out so I should stand and wait.ā
But because I had just written THIS and really believed in it, I paused and I thought, āYou know what? Iām a paying customer and it was really rude for her to come ask about my seat and expect me to wait somewhere else for my food.ā
I chose to not only sit, but to go back to enjoying my water and my people watching.
My food came rather quickly and as I left I noticed no fewer than four open seats at the bar that she couldāve chosen besides the one I was occupying.
I felt happy about my choice. Not because she had other options, but because I was tired and I honored my body and sat. I was proud of myself for giving myself permission to take up space. Ā I wanted to sit at the bar with my water and I did just that before I walked the mile back to my room with my small $30 quesadillas to my kids who probably wouldnāt touch them anyway, but it was the best I could do.
If you are an empath, and especially if you are an empath who writes, you NEED to read this post:
Itās very important for us to start to command a presence and live our life with less apology and guilt. We need to sit when we are tired and let other people figure their own sh*t out. Right?
Now of course, it youāre on a bus and thereās an elderly person who needs a seat, thatās different. But this was a bar in Las Vegas with a woman who could stand ā same as me.
So I say, empaths, letās dig deep and take up some space!

Which should be a good thing, right?
Except, there is one thing empaths have a hard time doing which makes it a HUGE challenge if you are trying to get your voice out in the world to be heard, seen and read.
We have a hard time taking up space!
Yep. Being empathic means you are empathetic to others. To their pains, worries, anguish, drama, and plight. You can literally feel what they are feeling and come from a place of understanding for even the most challenging person. You may not like the person, you may not agree with their behavior or support it, but you can have a sense of where they are coming from and why they got to where they are ā which makes you a great listener ā but not a great space-taker-upper.
And if you are going to get your book, your blog, your article, or your website out into the world and reach others in a big way ā you need to be able to take up space!
Empathy is both a super power for writers AND an Achillesā heel if you arenāt aware of it.
It means we often show up apologetically. In THIS great video from Matt Kahn he talks about how empaths are likely to get bumped in the supermarket by a cart and turn around and apologize for having our foot in the way (when we were just walking normally!).
Being understanding, seeing the core of an issue and how it came to be, does not mean that we shouldnāt be able to show up in the world with a big energy.
It just may not be in your first nature to do so. You may need to bring some awareness to it and really begin to āownā it.
Try it saying it with me āItās OKAY for me to take up space.ā
Oftentimes empaths have been broken down as children because we are sensitive in nature. We donāt want to offend anyone or rock the boat. It becomes our desire to blend in rather than stand out.
But if you are a writer, in todayās climate publishers want you to have a large following. They want you to have a proven concept with thousands of people lined up and ready to buy your book. If you are a blogger, people canāt find you if you donāt know how to label your key words so that you appear on page one of google results instead of page 13 (no one looks at page 13!) ā so you need to have that powerful energy to choose those strategic key words. You need to be able to command a presence, even if itās not comfortable at first.
Which is why Iām writing this to you to tell you that itās okay to take up space. Itās okay to command an energy and say āIām here and I deserve to be heard.ā Or even better, āPeople will benefit from what I have to say.ā
You have a unique point of view and a unique understanding and being empathic is what makes you relatable and able to share in such a way that people really get what you are saying. Sharing your voice is a gift. But if you hide it unknowingly, your gift wonāt reach those who are ready to receive it.
Itās okay for you to take up space!
Itās your birthright. We all should be able to show up and be seen.
Iām even seeing this with my soon-to-be-middle schooler who told me, āMom. I just want to blend in at school next year.ā When I asked him what he meant since heās dying to be an actor on a TV show and LOVES attention, he said, āWell if you are popular, those are the kids who are more likely to do drugs and have pressure to do drugs. But if you are weird you get bullied. So I just want to blend in.ā Heās a wise soul but it also made me sad that his plan is actually how we learn to hide our light. We donāt want to get bullied or picked on so we try to become incognito. Especially if you are sensitive you go out of your way not to be picked on and what kid isnāt sensitive?
As a fellow soulful writer, as an empathic writer, I can tell you this blending in will not get you far. Hiding your light will only come back to haunt you later when you unconsciously manifest being small in your adult life.
I donāt know how to solve my sonās problem just yet (other than encourage him to be himself and remind him that so far heās been accepted and he has a big group of friends who are good kids) ā but I will say that until I decided that I deserved to take up space, my writing was barely seen and rarely shared.
Itās okay for YOU to take up space.
In fact, you taking up space often helps humanity. If you are empathic, you are likely called to some type of healing work or humanitarian effort to help the earth and its amazing inhabitants. But you need to be seen and heard to help them! Empowered, if you will. Which means, you have a right to be seen, heard and command a strong presence when you want to.
You donāt have to be a force all of the time, but when needed, behind your words even, that energy can be POWERFUL.
Itās OKAY to take up space. Itās already yours – Claim it!
There was a time when we could hide behind pen names (you can still try it if you are powerful behind it) and publish anonymously, but the climate has changed. Itās an Instagram following #influencer world and empathic writers need to find the balance between the spotlight and our authentic voices.
If you would like some help activating your soulās voice and beginning to connect to that part of you who really knows and IS comfortable taking up space, I have an Unlock Writer’s Block Audio and Workbook Guide to help you. It will support you in beginning to connect to the wise and authentic you ā your soulās voice ā so you can feel more comfortable taking up space. More confident that your words are meant to be read.
The words wouldnāt be coming to you, if you werenāt the one who is meant to convey them.
Itās okay for you to take up space.

We all have our purpose and reason for showing up.
And it isnāt to blend in.
Let’s take up some space!

Thereās a lot of talk about this thing we call āWriterās Block.ā This idea that when you need to write you canāt, or you are somehow blocked from writing and you end up sadly staring at a blank page instead.
There are many reasons for this phenomena, but none that I feel are actually a “block.” Here are several reasons you may feel blocked when you want to write, and how to move passed it.
Ā
There are times when we feel we should write, or we have a deadline and we may want to push out the content or force. Well, that can be a challenge. Iāve been writing for at least 10 years between two websites and Iāve never once had a shortage of ideas or words for my own websites. When it becomes a challenge is if I try to write something that isnāt in line with my usual words or style, that I don’t feel connected to, or that perhaps Iām not meant to write.
And itās not because Iām special. It has to do with energy blocks and forcing our words.
For example, Iāve looked at websites to guest post and have been completely stumped as to what I would say that matches their content. But my own website? I have pages and pages of ideas and only a shortage of time to get them executed.
Make sure you are connecting to your content and allowing it to flow, instead of forcing it to come!

How you feel when you write matters. If you try to write at a time when you are uninspired, it can be very challenging. Writing has a feel to it and is a creative endeavor like any other. Creativity is hard to force ā no matter what.
Which means, when you feel that block, itās time to move your body, do something fun, and THEN connect to your Inner Voice that may be trying to reach you.
Even putting on three minutes of music and dancing around your house will get things flowing. Better yet, get outdoors, hit the gym WITHOUT worrying about your writing. Worrying about it wonāt make it come. But ironically, not thinking about it will.

Maybe someone gave you feedback that made you feel like giving up?
Perhaps you feel pressure because your audience is growing and now youāre second guessing your words?
It could be that a series of events happened in your life that made it hard to move forward with ANYTHING.
Writing, when you are clear channel is like turning on the water faucet ā it just flows. And there are times when that flow is turned off and thatās OKAY.
We arenāt meant to be creative 24/7.
Creativity comes from being in the present moment, doing something, and suddenly the idea hits or that light bulb goes off. In those moments, get to your paper and pen or even turn on a voice memo to capture it.
Because thatās when youāre inspired to write.

Thereās one other āblockā that gets in the way of our writing and that is when something needs to be healed.
Oftentimes when we write, it stirs up old memories. Things we may have forgotten or things we may want to forget. Rather than face those memories and get curious as to what insight they have to offer, we can find ourselves wanting to avoid writing. It feels like something weād just rather not do. Once weāre through that healing, then the flow is back and the words find their way to your page.
Itās always a good idea if you feel blocked to get curious and wonder why. Is it truly the words arenāt coming? Or is something else going on energetically? Are you forcing it before itās ready?
There are times when you might get feedback from an editor that you need to make big changes, you may know that something is wrong with your content but you can’t quite put your finger on it, or your words sound “clunky.” Writing when you know something is off but you have yet connected to how to fix can be pointless.
It’s better to do something else. Go have some fun! Hit the beach, swim, walk in nature while you noodle it over and let it work itself out. Then when you have that flash of insight as to how to fix it, THAT’S the time to hit the keyboard or record it into you phone. Otherwise, you can just be pushing against a closed door.
I know we can have deadlines to meet, but still – go for that walk, hit the gym, take a yoga class, anything that gets your energy moving.

Meditation is another great way to move the energy and connect to your words. When they feel stuck, put on your headphones to 30 minutes of calming music and give your mind a mini-vacation. It often moves the clutter and stress enough so that you can see how to resolve the places you know something is off and then you can go fix it.

Now I know we can get sentimentally attached to our writing – it happens! But there are times when you just need to start over. You’d be surprised how blocked you can feel trying to re-work words that just aren’t working, but when you take a break, meditate and walk in nature and start over – it can actually be faster to rewrite the document rather than “re-work” it. And the second time it often sounds seamless.
I’m the first to admit there are times when I’ve spent countless hours on a blog post and the thought of starting over makes me tear up a little, but every time I’ve done, my new version has always been 100 times better than the old one. Usually the do-over is pretty quick because I’ve already done the hard part of figuring out what should be included and what shouldn’t be. So I know it sucks, but sometimes it’s the better way to go.

Thereās also another type of writing for those of you who are Bridges and Scribes (see 22 Signs You Are a Sacred Scribe or Bridge). If thatās the case, you can actually commit to a time to write and it will flow best during those hours after you show up at that committed time for a few weeks.
For example, for several years I used to write first thing in the morning before I did anything else and I never had a shortage of ideas. I would wake with the idea and sit down to write it. It was only after I also committed to an exercise routine and meditation practice that I altered that practice and began to write at different times of the day. But for years, showing up in the morning several days a week worked great!
If you suspect you are a Bridge or Scribe try telling the universe, āI will show up every Monday at 7:00 p.m. to writeā and see what happens (You choose the time and date of course). You may be surprised at how those words just flow once you commit!
In my opinion, Writerās Block is an energy block, just like any other. If you know how to move the energy, you remove the obstacle, right?
